her prudent parents on her behalf and then Jane herself ends up

to go hunting for a donor. There will be stem cells waiting for use 
in a transplant.

 In the fine scale, when you think of freezing from the chemistry 
perspective, things start to look very different below 0 ° C. 
Freezing transforms liquid water into crystalline ice that pulls out 
of solution liquid water molecules.
 This increases the effective concentration of anything that is 
dissolved in the liquid phase, and you cannot simply go up to any 
arbitrary level with osmotic concentrations in tissues. 
 For cells, that's not great. Worse, as ice is formed, crystals like 
needles can puncture and destroy cells. This is part of the 
damaging cause of frostbite; it destroys the freezing tissue.

 Parents may choose to newborn cord blood banking in a private 
bank for their own later collection or donation, or they may choose 
to donate the cord blood of their newborn to a public bank where 
any matching donor can collect it.

may find it harder to find matches in the bone marrow donor 
registry, due to the relatively smaller likelihood that stem cells will 
cause an immune response in a donor.
