What is EPF and EPF Registration?
EPF stands for Employee Provident Fund.
This was a scheme regulated by the central
government under The Employees’
Provident Fund and Miscellaneous
Provisions Act, 1952.
EPF is one of the most advantageous method
of investment for salaried employees.
EPF Registration means registering yourself
with the EPFO (Employees’ Provident Fund
Organization).
Who all need to apply for EPF
Registrations?
Therefore, there can be 3
categories for those who need
to apply for EPF Registration
mandatorily. They are:
I. Every factory engaged in an
industry or organization which
employs 20 or more employees.
II. Any establishment having 20 or
more employees in any
previous year.
III. Every employee who draws less
than INR 15000/- per month at
the time of joining.
How does the EPF function?
The EPF functions on the principle of
contribution.
Whenever an employee is hired by an
organisation that comes under EPF
scheme, he has to contribute a fixed
percentage of his salary to the EPF.
These contributions have to be made
regularly.
These contributions are then pooled up in
the terms of savings which are given to
the employee at the time of retirement.
Rate of Contribution
Rate of contribution for establishment hiring
20 employees or more:
1. Employer has to contribute 12% of the basic
salary plus dearness allowance to the EPF.
2. Employee also has to contribute 12% of his
basic salary plus dearness allowance to EPF.
An important point here is that the
employee may also contribute 100% of his
salary to EPF according to EPF rules,
whereas the employer cannot do this.

Another notable point is that not whole
of the employer’s share moves to the
EPF. 8.33% goes to the pension
scheme, whereas the remaining 3.67%
goes to the EDLI account.
