Most people wanting to live and work in the UK must apply for a valid visa through a 
points-based system. The system was initially applied to migrants from non-EU countries.

How points are calculated?
 
Applicants must secure sufficient points to meet the UK skilled worker visa eligibility 
requirements. One should score at least 70 points for attributes like English language skills, 
education, work experience, job offer, being under 26 years, etc. 
 
Having a valid job offer for a skilled job position from an approved employer would give you 
50 points. A further 20 points are also given if the job offered pays a salary of at least 
£25,600 a year. 
What is a shortage occupation?
 
A shortage occupation list features all occupations 
that are currently a massive demand in the UK. The 
list plays a crucial role in helping employers fill a range 
of job positions for which no local talent is available. 
These jobs have lower salary thresholds, making it 
easier for applicants to claim maximum points.
 
Some of these jobs are:
 
• Care workers
• Graphic designers
• Nurses
• Vets
The government regularly updates the list based on economic conditions and advice from 
experts, called the Migration Advisory Committee. In March 2023 budget, the government 
included some more occupations to the list:
 Bricklayers and masons
 Roofers, roof tilers, and slaters
 Carpenters and joiners
 Other construction and building trades
 Plasterers
 
The government will update the list with more occupations in autumn 2023.
