LEGENDS OF BOLLYWOOD LEGENDS OF BOLLYWOOD Mehboob Khan (1906-64) Mehboob Khan was producerdirector of Hindi film industry. His film Roti (1940) projected the Indian society. His most memorable film is Mother India released in 1957. This film is one of the best classics of Indian film industry. His another famous film Andaz, featuring stars like Dilip Kumar, Raj Kapoor and Nargis, has also made a great impact on the Indian audience. He was a is one of the landmarks of Bollywood. Image Source: medium.com Bimal Roy (1909-66) When Bimal Roy entered Bollywood, he started working as a camera assistant. Bimal Roy was born in Dhaka, Bangladesh. As a director, he made his first film in Bengali named as Udayer Pathey that was later remade in Hindi titled Humrahi. In 1953, he released two films, Do Bigha Zamin and Sujata that are the most notable work of Bimal Roy. He also made the mainstream films like Biraj Bahu (1954), Devdas (1955) and Madhumati (1958). At the beginning of his career, Guru Dutt worked as a choreographer and also as an assistant director. He did his directorial debut with movie Baazi. Guru Dutt’s was the part of some really entertaining films like Aar Paar, Mr. and Mrs. 55 and CID. His film Pyaasa was critically acclaimed and was listed as one of the 100 films of all time by Time magazine. Even being a commercial failure, his film Kaagaz Ke Phool is one of the films that are shown to the NSD students of all streams. He entered into the Hindi film Industry as a clapper boy and went on to become one of the finest and sensitive film director who tried to project the plight of common people through his films. Aag was his first film as a director after he set up the R K Films banner in 1948. His Awara and Shri 420, Bobby and Satyam Shivam Sundaram are some of his most successful films. Awara established Raj Kapoor as a legend. Mera Naam Joker made in 1970 was his most ambitious project but it was a commercial failure. Image Source: imdb.com Dev Anand(1923-2011) The juvenile actor was known for his different style of dialogue delivery and is intense acting. Dev Anand started his career from the military censor office at Churchgate, Mumbai at a salary of Rs. 160. He entered the film industry with his first film Hum Ek Hain (1946). His film Ziddi (1948) established him as a successful actor. In his 5 decade career, has worked in over 110 films. Some of his famous films are Jewel Thief, C.I.D., Paying Guest and Baazi. Guide was his most successful film and it was also his first coloured film. He won the Padma Bhushan award in 2001 for his contribution to the Indian film industry. he has also won the Dadasaheb Phalke Award (2002). His real name is Yusuf Khan but he had to adopt a Hindu name, so he changed his name to Dilip Kumar. He debuted with the Hindi film Jwar Bhata (1944), but the film could not do well. Jugnu (1947) was his first commercially successful movie. His other hit films are Andaz, Deedar, Amar, Devdas and Madhumati (1958). He was awarded the Padma Bhushan (1991) and Dadasaheb Phalke Award (1994) for his work in Hindi film industry. Dilip Kumar(1922-present) Image Source: imdb.com Rajesh Khanna (1942-2012) Rajesh Khanna is referred as the first superstar of Indian film industry. He had participated and won a talent hunt named All India Talent Contest (1965). In the contest, he competed with ten thousand contestants. His first film was Aakhri Khat, released in 1996. But, he became popular with the film Raaz (1967). He has 160 films under his belt, most of the films were huge hits. His most popular films are Aanand, Avishkar, Kati Patang, Aradhana, Ittefaq, Sachcha Jhutha, Amar Prem. He is a three time winner of Filmfare Best Actor award. He was also awarded Padma Bhushan by the government of India in 2013, after his demise. He made his entry into films as a voiceover artist in 1969. His debutant film as an actor was Saat Hindustani. Untill Zanjeer (1973) none of his films could help him make his mark. But Zanjeer was a massive hit and upgraded his career. Most of his films were blockbuster hits including Sholay, Silsila, Abhiman, Chupke Chupke, Lawaris, Namak Haram, Natwarlal, etc. He is a National Film Award winner. Sharmila Tagore (1944-present) A Bengali actress who achieved success young, Sharmila appeared in numerous Bengali classics before making the jump to Hindi cinema, which first made her a romantic actress and later a legendary actress thanks to her intense films opposite Superstar Rajesh Khanna. A distant relative of poet Rabindranath Tagore.Her pairing with Shammi Kapoor made her famous in the sixties but as an actress she evolved and became popular due to different films, each belonging to different genre, she did opposite the Superstar Rajesh Khanna.The pair gave 6 box office blockbusters and 3 unfortunate box office flops which were critically acclaimed films. Image Source: alamy.com Dharmendra(1935-present) This handsome actor debuted in 1960 with the Hindi film Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere, but his film Phool Aur Patthar rose him to fame as an actor in1966. Even being a newcomer he got the chance to work with leading actresses Bollywood and gave many hits including Pratigya, Azaad, Sholay, Ghazab, Bhagavat, Hukumat, Dharam Aur Kanoon, Raaj Tilak, Charas, Aag Hi Aag, Ghulami, and Loha. Until 1997, even being a successful actor of his time was never nominated to any Filmfare Award category. In 1997, he was awarded the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award presented by legendary actor Dilip Kumar and his wife Saira Banu. She has worked in some of the major hits of her time like Pyaasa (1957), Jahan Ara (1964) and Geet(1970). Mala Sinha was the most popular heroine among her contemporaries and acted as a lead heroine for a long span of time since 1957 to 1974. Hema Malini started her career as an actress in Hindi films with Sapnon Ka Saudagar opposite Raj Kapoor in 1968. She earned the title of the "Dream Girl" after she was featured in the film with the same title. With her beauty and talent, held a glorious reign between the years 1970 to 1985. She gave back to back hits with the superstar Rajesh Khanna almost 10 hits. She was awarded the Filmfare Best Actress award for her fabulous acting in Seeta Aur Geeta in 1972. She grew an interest in dancing and at an early age and started learning classical dance. She also performed at various stage shows and the famous director Bimal Roy spotted her in one of her stage shows. He offered her a role in his next film Maa 1952 when she was just 10. At sixteen, she auditioned for Goonj Uthi Shehnai, but she got rejected by the director Vijay Bhatt as he thought that she was not a star material.
