AIR QUALITY LIFE INDEX REPORT INTRODUCTION • The annual report of the Air Quality Life Index (AQLI) was updated with an innovative tool created by the The Energy Policy Institute Chicago . • It reveals that air pollution posed the greatest risk to human health before the pandemic. Source: The Economic times LIFE EXPECTANCY • According to the report Air pollution reduces global life expectancy by nearly 2 years. • Where as Air pollution cuts life expectancy of Indians by 5.2 years. Source: The Economic times SIGNIFICANCE OF AQLI • AQLI is based on the causal relationship between human exposure to air pollution and reduced life expectancy. • It makes apparent that policies that reduce fossil fuel use can allow people to live longer and healthier lives today. Source: The Indian Express KEY POINTS • India is the world’s second-most polluted country after  Bangladesh. • In India air pollution shortened the average life expectancy by 5.2 years. Source: Zee News REPORT ON INDIA • The shortening lives by 9.4 years  was observed in the national capital Delhi. • The highest loss of life expectancy in India was in UP’s capital city Lucknow. Source: Livemint WORST POLLUTED STATE IN INDIA • Lucknow has the highest pollution level in the country  which is 11 times greater than the WHO guideline . • The residents of Lucknow stand to lose 10.3 years of life expectancy if the same pollution levels persist.
