CHINA'S "CLEAN PLATE CAMPAIGN" INTRODUCTION • China is taking action to cut down on food waste. The government has started a new campaign to encourage people to think about the amount of food they waste. • It is called the "Clean Plate Campaign". Food production has decreased because of the corona virus and because of floods in southern China. • President Xi said that China have to maintain a sense of crisis about food security. Source: Metro SPECULATION BY MEDIA • The initiative sparked speculation by some media over whether China is in a food crisis. • Experts say the world indeed faces a food shortage, but for China, the real threat to food security comes more from food. Source: The New York Times PENALIZE FOOD-WASTING BEHAVIOR • In 2013, the “Operation Empty Plate” campaign was launched that targeted extravagant feasts and reception held by officials, rather than putting the onus on the public. • This platform will penalize food-wasting behaviour when spotted. Source: BBC.com WUHAN CATERING INDUSTRY • The Wuhan Catering Industry Association urged restaurants in the city to limit the number of dishes served to diners. • The Association asked restaurants to implement a system where groups must order one dish less than the number of diners.
