Coronavirus Vaccine Updates Know the Disease… • Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is a recently discovered coronavirus-caused infectious disease. • The COVID-19 virus spreads mainly by droplets of saliva or nose discharge when an infected person coughs or sneezes, so it's important that you also practice respiratory etiquette (e.g. by coughing into a flexed elbow) Reality • Most people infected with the COVID-19 virus will develop mild to moderate respiratory disease and recover without any special treatment being needed. • There are no unique COVID-19 vaccines or therapies available at this time. There are however several current clinical trials testing new therapies. As soon as clinical findings become available WHO will continue to provide updated information. Updates #1 • There are currently studies into potential vaccines and certain particular drug therapies. They are undergoing clinical trials. • WHO is organizing efforts to produce COVID-19 vaccines and medicines for prevention and treatment. Updates #2 • There is no vaccine against COVID-19, and no clear antiviral medicines. However, people, particularly those with serious illness, can need to be hospitalized to allow them to receive emergencies life-saving care. Due to such treatment the majority of patients recover. Updates #4 • A microbiologist has been the first human to be vaccinated against the novel coronavirus being produced by a group of scientists at the University of Oxford for the clinical trial phase of a vaccine in the UK. Updates #5 • Elisa Granato is the first participant to be part of the ground-breaking trial in an initial group of 800. • The researchers started screening healthy volunteers for the 'ChAdOx1 nCoV-19' vaccine trial in March. Updates #6 • They will now be tracked to track the effect of each one for 48 hours. Scientists would then slowly begin injecting new volunteers, healthy individuals between the ages of 18 and 55, through a similar half-and-a-half cycle – with none of the participants realizing which vaccine they were injected with. Updates #7 • Meanwhile, German regulatory body PEI green-lighted the country's first human volunteer trials for a vaccine developed by German firm Biontech and US giant Pfizer on Wednesday. • While about 150 research projects are now being implemented worldwide, the German and British plans are among only five human clinical trials approved worldwide. Updates #8 • On March 16, Beijing approved the first trial for a vaccine developed by the military-backed Military Medical Sciences Academy and CanSino Bio, a Hong Kong-listed biotech company. • The US drug developer Moderna said that the US National Institutes of Health had started clinical testing for their vaccine that day.
