Netflix
Netflix has seen subscriber numbers surge this year.
Almost 16 million people created accounts in the
first three months of the year, the firm said. That is
nearly double the number of new sign-ups it saw in
the final months of 2019.
Assam’s tea industry
Assam's 180-year-old tea industry has been hit hard
by the coronavirus lockdown and is staring at a
massive revenue loss, according to an industry
expert. The state's tea gardens employ around lakhs
of workers; they had to close on March 22 but were
allowed to resume operations in mid-April with a
maximum of 50 per cent of their workforce.

Oil shock
The benchmark price of US oil futures, which had
never dropped below $10 a barrel in its nearly 40-year
history, plunged to a previously unthinkable minus
$38 a barrel. In just a few months, the coronavirus
pandemic has destroyed so much fuel demand,
leaving the United States with so much oil there was
nowhere to put it.

PM Narendra Modi announced a lockdown on March
24 to contain the spread of coronavirus. However, the
lockdown was extended as the Covid-19 positive
cases continued to rise in the country. As the
lockdown halted businesses, many have since been
left jobless. Not only in India, in the United States, 26
million people have become unemployed.

Confusion on new
guidelines
Shops selling non-essential items remained shut in
the national capital as shopkeepers sought more
clarity on a Central government order allowing them
to operate during the lockdown period with some
restrictions. Officials in the national capital also said
they are awaiting fresh guidelines for shopkeepers in

Some shops opened
The Delhi government on Saturday reiterated an
order issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA)
concerning shops that are now being allowed to open
for business starting April 25. MHA had permitted
certain shops to reopen, provided that they follow
social distancing norms along with safety
precautions.
