Environmental Impact of Agriculture.
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT OF AGRICULTURE Degradation of Land • The degradation of land in one form or the other is matter of serious concern endangering sustainability of agriculture. Source: economicsdiscussion.net Biodiversity • India is a country with wide variety of agro- climatic conditions which harbour a wide variety of animals and plants. • As agriculture is becoming more and more commercialized, several plant and animal species are becoming extinct. Source: economicsdiscussion.net Pest Problem • With the shift in crop pattern, increase in area under irrigation and higher cropping intensity, the pest problem has become very severe. • The seriousness of pests has further increased by way of indiscriminate and increased use of pesticides. Source: economicsdiscussion.net Disposal of Industrial & Agricultural Wastes • The use of by-products such as paddy straw and rice husk has not been made properly. • The burning of such by-products creates increase in carbon dioxide in the atmosphere resulting in respiratory problems for animals and human beings. Source: economicsdiscussion.net Air Pollution • The mechanization of agriculture require various energy resources such as diesel, electricity, petrol etc. • Moreover, higher use of fertilizers as well, has negative impact on the ecology of the country by air pollution. Source: economicsdiscussion.net Health hazards • The direct effect of high use of dangerous pesticides is on human and animal health. • A large variety of cases of residual effect of pesticides and intake by human and animals have created health hazards. Source: economicsdiscussion.net Depletion of grass land • The depletion of vegetative cover such as grass lands and forest tree species and similarly extinction of wild animals, birds and insects is matter of concern. Source: economicsdiscussion.net Fresh Water Consumption • Worldwide, agriculture accounts for 70 percent of human freshwater consumption. • A great deal of this water is redirected onto cropland through irrigation schemes of varying kinds. Source: economicsdiscussion.net Impacts on Soils • Without adequate fertility management practices, soil fertility declines as consecutive crop cycles mine nutrients from the soils.
