Google Lens
Google Lens is an AI-powered technology that uses
your smartphone camera and deep machine learning
to not only detect an object in front of the camera
lens, but understand this and offer actions such as
scanning, translation, shopping, and more.

Launch
Google Lens was one of Google's biggest
announcements way back in 2017, but it was a Google
Pixel exclusive feature when that phone launched.
Since then, Google Lens has come to the majority of
Android devices, the app is available to download on
Google Play.

Features
Google Lens enables you to point your phone at
something, such as a specific flower, and then ask
Google Assistant what the object you're pointing at is.
You'll not only be told the answer, but you'll get
suggestions based on the object, like nearby florists, in
the case of a flower.

Other features
Google Lens will recognize restaurants, clubs, cafes,
and bars, presenting a pop-up window showing
reviews, address details and opening times. It has the
ability to recognize everyday objects which is
impressive. It will recognize a hand and suggest the
thumbs up emoji, which is a bit of fun.

What else can it do?
You can point your phone at text and with Google
Translate plugging in, it will live translate text. If you
see a dress you like while shopping, Google Lens can
identify that piece and similar articles of clothing. This
works for household decor and more, too, via relevant
reviews and shopping options.
How does it work?
Google has a standalone app on Android for Google
Lens if you want to get straight into the features.
Within Google Assistant also you will see a Google
Lens icon in the bottom right hand corner. Within
Google Photos, Google Lens can identify buildings or
landmarks, for instance, presenting users with
directions and opening hours for them.

Source of information
Using the camera on your handset, Google Lens can
scan a product, animal, text or something else in
your environment and tell you what that object is.
The service relies on information sourced from
Google and other places to give you accurate
information about the subject.

In the future
Given that Google Lens represents the cutting edge of
camera technology and Google's implementation of it,
there are constant updates and rumoured features.
Google Lens may soon get some educational features,
including a camera mode that could help students
with math problems if they're struggling with
homework.
