Nobel Peace Prize Introduction The Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded 102 times to 137 Nobel Prize laureates between 1901 and 2021, 109 individuals and 28 organizations. 2 Source: www.nobelprize.org Initiation of Nobel prize On 27 November 1895, Alfred Nobel signed his last will and testament, giving the largest share of his fortune - more than SEK 31 million to be converted into a fund and invested in "safe securities." The income from the investments was to be "distributed annually in the form of prizes to those who during the preceding year have conferred the greatest benefit to mankind." 3 Source: www.nobelprize.org Prize categories The Nobel Prizes were initially given in the areas of Physics, Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine, Literature and Peace. The statutes of the Nobel Foundation specify categories of individuals who are eligible to make nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize. 7 Source: en.wikipedia.org Selection • Nominations are considered by the Nobel Committee at a meeting where a shortlist of candidates for further review is created. • This shortlist is then considered by permanent advisers to the Nobel institute, which consists of the institute's Director and the Research Director and a small number of Norwegian academics with expertise in subject areas relating to the prize.
