What is Coronary Artery Disease?
Coronary artery disease, sometimes referred to as
coronary heart disease or atherosclerosis, is the most
common form of heart disease. It is the number one
cause of death among both men and women in the
United States.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
(CDC) estimates heart disease strikes someone in the
US about once every 43 seconds.
Coronary Artery Functions
The coronary arteries carry blood to the heart,
supplying it with the oxygen and nutrients that the
heart muscle needs to function. There are two major
arteries that branch off of the aorta to supply blood to
the heart. They are called the right coronary artery and
the left main coronary artery.
The right coronary artery provides blood flow to the
right side of the heart. The left main coronary artery
divides into the left anterior descending artery, which
supplies blood to the front of the left side of the heart,
and the circumflex artery which supplies blood to the
left side and back of the heart.
Risk Factors for Coronary Artery Disease
High blood pressure
High LDL (bad) cholesterol
Low HDL (good) cholesterol
