International Womens Day is a global celebration 
observed annually on March 8th. It commemorates 
the social, economic, cultural, and political 
achievements of women worldwide. The day also 
serves as a call to action for gender equality and the 
advancement of women's rights. 
 
International Women's Day has its roots in the early 
20th century when women in many parts of the 
world began demanding better working conditions, 
suffrage (the right to vote), and equality. The first 
National Woman's Day was observed in the United 
States on February 28, 1909, in honor of a garment 
workers' strike in New York City.
