Life @ IISM AUGUST EDITION 1 INDIAN HOCKEY HEROES @IISM IISM was elated as the Indian Hockey heroes graced our campus recently. Manpreet Singh- Captain of the Indian Hockey team along with Harmanpreet Singh & Lalit Kumar visited us. These heroes were hosted by Mr. Nilesh Kulkarni, Founder Director- IISM. Their presence exhilarated the campus. IISM students got a golden opportunity to interact one-on- one with these young players. We discussed about Indian Sports and the comeback of hockey in India with the team's splendid performance at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. These boys brought India a medal from the Olympics aer 4 decades, making history and inspiring the future generaon at large. 2 Indians celebrated the 2020 Tokyo Olympics no less than a fesval from 23rd July to 8th August 2021. Aer all, we had waited an addional year for this quadrennial event. India had sent a total of 116 athletes to the Olympics and we're proud that they produced an unforgeable show for the audience at large. India has finished 48th in the medal tally finishing significantly higher, the best in 40 years. All of us should take a moment to appreciate all the athletes who represented our tricolor at the biggest sporng event. It is fair to menon that India had representaons in sports like fencing and equestrian for the first me and not to forget that fencer Bhavani Devi and Fouaad Mirza did their absolute best and compelled Indians to watch sports that they never had. Adi Ashok, the super golfer ranked 200 in the world beat top golfers and came very close to winning a medal for our naon, but to no avail, we are proud of her splendid shots. Our women's hockey team wrote themselves to history by defeang Australia to reach first-ever semifinals. Although the brave women couldn't bring home medals, they won billions of hearts with their determinaon. Dhanalakshmi Sekhar one of the members of the Indian mixed relay team of 4x400m, was informed only upon arrival from Tokyo that her sister had passed away so that she could focus on the Olympics. A total of 116 athletes at the Olympics from India and 116 inspiraonal stories to talk about. India brough home seven medals from the Olympics- 1 Gold, 2 Silver and 4 Bronze medals. She faced the reigning world no. 2 Busenaz Surmeneli of Turkey at the end of her race at the Olympics and performed with great spirits. She became the third Indian boxer to finish on the podium and the first Assamese woman to play at the Olympics. Lovlina was born on 2nd October 1997 and hails from Golaghat district of Assam. When she was a child, her father brought her a paper cung featuring an arcle on the legendary Mumammad Ali which drew Lovlina's interest in the sport. As a child, Lovlina followed the footsteps of her elder sisters and began with kickboxing but later shied to boxing full-me. Her talent was discovered by a renowned coach Padum Boro when the Sports Authority of India held trails at her school. Lovlina comes from a humble background and her father struggled financially to support her dreams. It was in 2014 that Lovlina began making a name for herself at a global plaorm. She won a bronze at the Junior Woman World Golden Glove of Vojvodina Boxing Tournament in Serbia in 2017. She rose to fame by winning a bronze at the 2017 Asian Championship held in Vietnam. Lovlina has won two bronzes at the World Championships, one in the year 2018 and the other in 2019. This wonder girl created history by becoming the only Indian woman to win two Olympic medals and the fourth athlete to win mulple medals in the women's singles badminton category. We were all roong for her and were confident that she'd come back with a medal from the esteemed sporng event. Pusarla Venkata Sindhu is rightly said to be the flag-bearer of the sport- badminton in India. PV became a household name when she won a silver medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Ever since the victory, she became one of the shiniest stars in the world of sports in India. PV became the first-ever Indian to win a gold at the BWF World Championships in 2019. She began with scripng noteworthy accomplishments from a young age and her journey to glory in a brief me frame is worth discussing. PV was born on 5 July 1995 in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh. Both her parents were naonal-level volleyball players and her father is an Arjuna Awardee who was a member of the team that had won a bronze at the Seoul Asian Games in 1986. Hailing from a family of sportspersons, PV drew towards sports from a young age and was inspired from the success of Pullela Gopichand. She was just 8 when badminton caught PV's fancy. Pusarla entered the internaonal circuit when she was 14. She secured a spot for herself into the top 20 of the BWF world ranking at the age of 17 in the year 2012. PV is the second woman shuler in the world to win more than 4 medals at the world championships. Breaking the barriers, she made herself to the Forbes list of Highest-Paid Female Athletes in 2018 and 2019. PV currently stands as World no. 7 honored with Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, and Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna. On day one of the Foundaon Week 2021-22, IISM acquainted them with the world of sports through interacons and learning. Mr. Nilesh Kulkarni, Founder Director IISM, addressed the students and encouraged them to pursue their dreams with dedicaon. Mr. Kulkarni quoted a saying of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, “FAIL” First Aempt In Learning”. He stated that the students should make aempts to fly high and face all the challenges with courage. With words of encouragement, Mr. Kulkarni wished the best to the future Sports Management professionals from IISM. 6 FOUNDATION WEEK 2021-22 for future Sports Management professionals from IISM IISM invited Ms. Adi Sunil Tatkare, Minister of Maharashtra State for Sports and Youth Affairs, as the Chief Guest of the Foundaon Week programme. Ms Adi shared insights on the workings & structure of the Sports Federaon in the state. Mr. Nilesh Kulkarni, Founder Director IISM, addressed the students and encouraged them to pursue their dreams with dedicaon. Ms. Rasika Kulkarni, Co-Founder & MD- IISM, touched upon the vision and mission of our instute and apprised that the students should be ready to break the barriers. Mr. Amit Gupte, Chief Operang- IISM, introduced the students with team IISM and guided them with diverse processes at IISM.
