Beast Grade 6 Math Workbook

Basics of Geometry Presented By: https://store.bobbytariq.com/ • What are the undefined terms in geometry? • What concepts present the foundations of geometry? • Can you sketch the intersection of lines and planes? • These questions (and much more!!) will be answered by the end of this presentation. • Are you ready? What is Geometry? Some of the important branches of geometry are: • Points, Lines, Angles, Curves, Surfaces and Solids • The Visual Study of Shapes , Sizes Patterns and Positions. Undefined Terms of Geometry Some of the Concepts are : • Lines • Points • Planes Lines What are Lines??? • Lines has no Beginning or End • Continues Indefinitely in both directions • Can Be illustrated by drawing arrows at each end Types of Lines ??? • Line • Line Segment • Ray • Perpendicular • Parallel • Intersecting Plane What is Plane??? • Plane is has two dimensions. • Represented by a slanted 4 sided figure without end but has edges. X T This is Plane T or plane XYZ (be sure to only use three of the points when Y Z naming a plane) Line Segments Let’s look at the idea of a point in between two other points on a line. Here is line AB, or recall A B symbolically AB The line segment does not extend without end. It has endpoints, in this case A and B. This is segment AB The segment contains all the points on the line between A and B Notice the difference in the symbolic notation! Lets Look at Ray A is called the initial point The initial point is always the first letter A B in naming a ray. Notice the difference in symbols from both Ray AB extends in a line and segment. one direction without end. Symbolized by AB Opposite Rays If Z is between X and Y, X Z Y then Z X and Z Y are opposite rays. Z is the common initial point for the rays! Angles Rays helps to identify the angels so it plays very important role. An angle consists of two different rays that have the same initial point. The rays are sides of the angles. The initial point is called the vertex. Notation: We denote an angle with three points and Symbol. The middle vertex Y point is always the vertex. We can also name the angle with just the vertex point. This angle can be denoted as: sides X YXZ , ZXY, or X Z Classifying Angles Angles are classified as acute, right, obtuse, and straight, according to their measures. Angles have measures greater than 0° and less or equal to 180°.
