ALL ABOUT FIRST SATELLITE OF SRILANKA RAAVANA-1 RAAVANA-1 • Country: Sri Lanka • Type: Cube Sat , 1U • Organization : Kyushu Institute of Technology • One liner : Remote Data Collection based on low powered LoRa modulation for demonstration. INTRODUCTION • Raavana 1 also recognized as BIRD LKA is the first satellite of Sri Lanka. • Sri Lankan low orbit cube research satellite. • Launched as part of Cygnus NG-11 by the US on 17 April 2019. • The Satellite was launched into the orbit on 17th June 2019 and sent into space on 18 April 2019. DEVELOPMENT • Satellite was developed by scholars of Peradeniya University's Engineering Faculty and Asian Institute of Technology. • The satellite was designed in Japan. DEVELOPMENT • Tharindu Dayarathna and Dulani Chamika Vithanage are scientist behind the model of satellite. • Raavana 1 has volume of about 1000 cubic centimetre. • Mass of about 1.1 kg. • The lifespan of the satellite is about one and half years. • The satellite will takes images of Sri Lanka and other countries near Sri Lanka. • Magnetic torques will use by satellite, to reduce its angular velocity. • The satellite was launched with Nepal's first satellite NepaliSat-1. LAUNCH • Raavana-1 hand over to Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) on 18 February. • The Satellite was sent to International Space Station on 17 April on Sri Lanka Standard Time at 2:16 a.m. It will be within the third batch known as BIRDS-3. It has five missions to complete. It will take fifteen pictures per day. MISSION • Raavana-1 missions to make available ciphered communication in its beacon in the 437 MHz band. • Made use of LoRa modulation for Remote Data Collection. MISSION • Imaging mission - public outreach and awareness. • Earth Magnetic Field measurement. • Glue Mission- find COTS alternative to expensive space glue • Active Attitude Stabilization- to active pointing control for future CubeSat
