Y • A non-English film won Best Movie for the first time. 10 Source: www.gettyimages.in THE HISTORIC SHAHEEN BAGH M PROTESTS CAME TO A R AN END C H • The Muslim women's demonstrations in Shaheen Bagh came to an end after almost one hundred days in India after demonstrating against the illegal acts of citizenship. • The protests ended on 24 March 2020 as Delhi Police vacated the site following the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak. 11 Source: www.newsclick.com M AUSTRALIAN BUSHFIRES A R C H • The world has experienced a most destructive wildfire season, with burning record 47 million hectares, displacing thousands of people and killing at least 34 people since December 2019. • The culmination of the bushfire season 2019-20 is marked on March 31 in Southern and Eastern Australia, ending the most destructive time in Australia. 12 Source: reuters.com KIM JONG UN DEATH A P RUMORS R I • The North Korean leader speculated that, after L skipping events to commemorate his grandfather Kim Il-sung on 15 April, he was either seriously ill or dead. • 20 days later, he reappeared at a ribbon cutting ceremony with pictures published by state media. 13 Source: www.thediplomat.com BLACK LIVES MATTER PROTESTS M A Y • This year, the shootings by police of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor triggered a series of nonviolent and often violent marches around the world demanding an end to police violence and racial inequality. • More protest broke out in August when Jacob Blake, 29, was shot and crippled by a Wisconsin Kenosha. 14 Source: www.theguardian.com THE VISHAKHAPATNAM M GAS LEAK A Y • Early on May 7, a gas leak was created by an LG Polymers plant in the town of Vishakhapatnam that killed twelve people and drowned hundreds in the city. • The plant has been working against environmental standards for over 20 years and has been highly attacked since this incident. 15 Source: www.timesofindia.com CYCLONE AMPHAN HIT EASTERN INDIA M A Y • Between 16 May and 21 May 2020, Cyclone Amphan struck East India and parts of Bangladesh. • A Category 5 hurricane, Amphan left at least 98 dead in India and many more injured. • During this tragedy, many lost their homes and families. 16 Source: www.nytimes.com THE LOCUST ATTACKS M A Y • Desert locusts are a collection of shorts that swarm fields and cause crop infestations. • On 13 May, they came to India via Rajasthan before being afraid to disperse in 18 regions, including Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Maharashtra, damaging crops. 17 Source: www.indiatv.com GOOD YEAR FOR J LGBTQ RIGHTS U N E • The rainbow banner flew with much pride on a variety of occasions. • It was a milestone year for the group when many countries approved gay marriages in 2020, including northern Ireland, Costa Rica and Taiwan. • Then the Supreme Court ruled that nobody should be dismissed from a job unless he or she is homosexual or transgender. 18 Source: www.nytimes.com TWITTER HACK J U L Y • Despite the packed primary applicants, the Biden clinched in June's nomination. • Also among the more than two dozen Democratic hopes in the race were Sen.
