2021 THROUGH SLIDES JANUARY Donald Trump banned from social media platform When Twitter permanently banned Trump from the platform in January 2021 during the final days of his term, his handle @realDonaldTrump had over 88.9 million followers. 2 JANUARY Death of Larry King Larry King was an American television and radio host, whose awards included two Peabodys, an Emmy and ten Cable ACE Awards. The veteran TV host died on 23 January at the age of 87 at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. 3 JANUARY Earthquake Strikes Indonesia A very powerful earthquake, measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale, rocked the Flores Sea in southern Indonesia, prompting tsunami alerts for nearby coastlines. 4 JANUARY Kim Jong-un is elected as the General Secretary of the ruling Workers' Party of Korea North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has been elected as general secretary of the ruling workers’ party. 5 FEBRUARY Death of Leon Spinks (Heavyweight Boxing champion) Leon Spinks, who scored one of boxing's greatest upsets when he defeated Muhammad Ali to capture the heavyweight championship in February 1978, but lost his crown in a rematch seven months later and never again found glory in the ring, died on Friday night in Henderson, Nev. He was 67. 6 FEBRUARY Jeff Bezos announces he is stepping down as CEO of Amazon World's richest man and the founder of Amazon.com, Jeff Bezos has stepped down from the position of CEO, after 27 years of steering the company. Bezos will now take over as Amazon’s executive chairman and continue to be its biggest shareholder. 7 MARCH An African woman leads the World Trade Organization Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala of Nigeria secured the support of the United States for Director-General of the WTO. Okonjo-Iweala assumed office on 1 March 2021, and became both the first woman and the first African to hold this position. 8 MARCH Once in a hundred year flood in Australia since 1961 Days of heavy rain pounded the Australian province of New South Wales (NSW) at the end of March 2021, leading to a once-in-a-hundred-year-flood with water amounts unseen since 1961. 9 APRIL Death of Prince Philip Prince Philip, husband of Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom, died on 9 April,2021. He was 99. 10 APRIL End of Castro rule in Cuba Raul Castro is set to step down as the head of the Communist Party of Cuba. · This will mark an end to over 60 years of Castro rule over Cuba. 11 APRIL The President of Chad, Idriss Déby, was killed after 30 years in office Chadian President Idriss Deby Itno, who ruled the central African nation for more than three decades, died Tuesday of wounds suffered on the battlefield during a fight against rebels, the military announced on national television and radio. 12 APRIL COVID-19 pandemic: The number of vaccinations administered worldwide exceeds 1 billion The world has reached the milestone of administering one billion doses of COVID-19 vaccines, just four months after the World Health Organization (WHO) approved the first vaccine for emergency use, and roll-outs began in countries such as the United States and the United Kingdom. 13 MAY "Friends" reunion screens, 17 years after the TV sitcom series ended The Reunion brings the original six cast members of the beloved sitcom together 17 years after the finale aired, and offers some fun and intriguing behind-the-scenes reveals along the way. 14 JUNE Cristiano Ronaldo moves Coke bottle, Coca-Cola value drops Cristiano Ronaldo’s gesture for people to drink water instead of Coke at a Euro 2020 press conference may have cost the soda company $4 billion in market value. 15 JUNE 2021 Israeli presidential election is held, and won by Isaac Herzog Isaac Herzog was elected the 11th President of Israel with 87 Knesset members voting for him, which was the biggest majority a candidate has ever won. 16 JUNE Annular solar eclipse is visible from Canada, Greenland, and other countries The June 10 solar eclipse is an annular one. In an annular eclipse, the Sun is not entirely covered and a thin boundary of it is visible, which is called the ‘ring of fire.’ 17 JULY 2020 Summer Olympics Summer Olympics in Tokyo happened on July 23, 2021. The new date for the Games, postponed for a year in response to the coronavirus pandemic. 18 JULY Flooding and Typhoons in China During the July 2021 flooding, the three major provinces affected as a result of prolonged rainfall and Typhoon In-Fa were the Henan, Shanghai, and Zhejiang provinces. Between 10 and 23 July 2021, Henan province was the worst affected by floods. 19 JULY Over 130 wildfires, fuelled by lightning strikes, burn through Western Canada More than 130 wildfires - fuelled by lightning strikes - are burning across western Canada following a record-breaking heatwave. 20 AUGUST Tokyo 2020 Paralympic The 16th Summer Paralympic Games, held in Tokyo, Japan between 24 August and 5 September 2021. 21 AUGUST Haiti Earthquake and Tropical Storm Grace Tropical Storm Grace swept over Haiti with drenching rains just two days after a powerful earthquake battered the Caribbean nation, adding to the misery of thousands who lost loved ones, suffered injuries or found themselves homeless and forcing overwhelmed hospitals and rescuers to act quickly. 22 SEPTEMBER French actor Jean-Paul Belmondo died Jean-Paul Charles Belmondo was a French actor, initially associated with the New Wave of the 1960s and a major French film star for several decades from the 1960s. 23 OCTOBER World Health Organization endorses the first malaria vaccine The World Health Organization has recommended the widespread rollout of the first malaria vaccine, in a move experts hope could save tens of thousands of children’s lives each year across Africa. 24 OCTOBER Lucy spacecraft is launched by NASA, the first mission to explore the Trojan asteroids The US space agency NASA has launched a first-of-its-kind mission called 'Lucy Mission' to study Jupiter's Trojan asteroids. The mission life of Lucy is 12-year, during which the spacecraft will fly by a total of eight ancient asteroids to study about solar system's evolution. 25 OCTOBER India crosses landmark of 900 million Covid vaccinations India's Union health minister Mansukh Mandaviya confirmed that India has administered 980 million COVID-19 vaccine jabs to the people till October,2021. 26 NOVEMBER Barbados becomes a republic on its 55th anniversary of independence Barbados Governor General Sandra Mason was sworn in before dawn on Tuesday as the island marked its 55th anniversary of independence from Britain. 27 NOVEMBER Louis Vuitton star designer Virgil Abloh dies after private battle Virgil Abloh, the American-born son of Ghanaian immigrants who became fashion's highest profile Black designer and the creative mind behind Louis Vuitton's menswear collections, died on Sunday at age 41, following a two-year battle with a rare form of cancer. 28 NOVEMBER First confirmed case of omicron detected On November 26, 2021, the World Health Organization (WHO) classified a new variant, B.1.1.529, as a Variant of Concern and named it Omicron. 29 NOVEMBER India's CDS Bipin Rawat died in a helicopter crash Chief of Defence Staff Gen Bipin Rawat, his wife and 11 others died after the Mi-17V5 helicopter crashed in the southern state of Tamil Nadu. 30
