z INTRODUCTION
 India approved two new coronavirus vaccines – Covishield from Bharat Biotech's Serum Institute of India 
and Covaxin. A limited Emergency Approval for the two COVID-19 vaccines in the country was issued by 
the DCGI of India.

z What type of approval has been granted?
 Both vaccines have received a “restricted use approval in an emergency situation” similar to an Emergency 
Use Authorisation that countries like the UK and US have been granting to companies like Pfizer, Moderna 
and AstraZeneca for their vaccines.
 This means that, while the firms have not finished clinical trials, the vaccines have been licenced for use. 
The nation desired to use a vaccine as soon as possible in the face of the pandemic.

z EMERGENCY USE AUTHORIZATION OF 
VACCINE
 The announcement by the health ministry comes just days after India's drugs regulator approved 
emergency use authorization of Oxford COVID-19 vaccine Covishield, locally manufactured by Serum 
Institute of India and Bharat Biotech's indigenously manufactured Covaxin.

 Covishield secured a restricted approval with the help of data generated from over 23,000 participants in 
AZD1222’s trials in countries like the UK and Brazil. 
 In the case of Covaxin, the regulator felt it needed to be approved because it felt the inactivated platform 
would be able to protect against mutations.

 The Center is in negotiations with all organisations who have been approved for vaccination. The Central 
Government will purchase vaccine supplies directly and administer them to countries according to its 
specifications in compliance with recommendations of the national Advisory Group on the administration of

z WHO WILL GET THE VACCINE?
 During the first phase of vaccination, nearly 30 crore people 
will get the vaccine. As soon as they are available, health 
workers and frontline employees will receive the vaccine. 
 People above the age of 50 will then be given a dosage of 
underlying comorbidities and preceded by people under the 
age of 50.

VOLUNTARY?
 The COVID-19 vaccination will be voluntary, the health ministry earlier stated. However it is advisable to 
receive the complete schedule of the vaccine for protecting one-self against this disease and also to limit 
the spread of this disease to the close contacts including family members, friends, relatives and co-
workers.

z How to register for the COVID-19 vaccine:
 Registration is mandatory to receive a coronavirus vaccine. Once the registration is complete, the 
beneficiary will receive SMS on their registered mobile number on the due date, place and time of

vaccination.
