display that does not need electricity to sustain 
the displayed text and image. Just like real 
paper, the displayed image resembles ink on

Electronic Paper 
Display
The displays are made of millions of minuscule 
capsules fi lled with a clear fluid containing 
microscopic particles of different colours and 
electrical charges. 
The displays can hold static text and images for 
months without electricity. That is, it can retain 
text and images even when power is off .

Types of Electronic 
Paper Display (e-Paper)
There are two types of Electronic Paper Display.
• Flexible Electronic Paper Display
• Non-Flexible Electronic Paper Display

Flexible e-Paper Display
• Flexible displays use plastic substrates and 
plastic electronics for the display back-plane. 
These types of screens can be bent unlike 
other normal screens.

Non-Flexible e-Paper 
Display
• Non-Flexible e-Paper are stiff  like any other 
normal screen.

Advantages of E-Paper 
Display
• Consumes less power
• Display stays for a long time without power
• It is available in multiple sizes
• It is a high-definition and paper-like 
appearance display

Disadvantages of E-
Paper Display
• Display is slow to update
• Not suitable for animation or fast-changing 
displays
• Costlier as compared to LCD and other 
similar size displays.
• Currently, it has limited software library and 
supports very few fonts
• It has less memory

How does e-Paper 
Work?
• The primary substance used in the electronic 
paper display is Electronic Ink. Electronic Ink is 
the main material that is processed into a fi lm 
for combining into electronic displays. 
• Electronic ink is a fusion of physics, chemistry 
and electronics to create this new material.

The applications include:

Conclusion
As each and every development in the past few 
years has revolved around mobility & ease of 
information flow, e-Paper seems to fi t right into 
the mould for the future. 
Other gadgets can be replaced by e-Paper to 
decrease battery usage and to read easily even in 
sunlight.
