SWACHH SURVEKSHAN 2020 INTRODUCTION • Swachh Survekshan 2020 is a survey conducted by the Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry to rank the cleanest cities of the country. Source: Swachh Survekshan WHY IN NEWS • Recently, the Swachh Survekshan 2020 report has been launched by the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA). • It is the fifth edition of the annual cleanliness urban survey conducted by the MoHUA. It is one of the world’s largest sanitation surveys. Source: Organiser.org KEY HIGHLIGHTS • Indore was announced as the cleanest city in India by the Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry. • As per the results of the Swachh Survekshan 2020, Patna and Gaya are one of the dirtiest cities in the country. Source: Cleanliness Survey OBJECTIVE • The objective of Swachh Survekshan is to generating large-scale citizen participation in the Mission, along with inculcating a spirit of healthy competition among cities towards becoming India's cleanest cities. Source: Swachh Survekshan RANKS OF INDIA • Gujarat’s Surat bagged the second spot, Maharashtra’s Navi Mumbai ranked third. • Varanasi was adjudged the ‘best Ganga town’ in the central government’s cleanliness survey. Source: naidunia.com BEST-PERFORMING STATE • Meanwhile, Jharkhand ranked on top in the list of best performing states, with less than 100 ULBs, in terms of overall performance. • Chhattisgarh bagged the award for the best-performing state with over 100 ULBs. Source: Swachh Survekshan ALL ABOUT THE SURVEY • 1.87 crore citizens participated in the survey of 4,242 cities, 62 cantonment boards and 92 towns along the Ganga river. • The 'Swachh Survekshan 2020' was completed in 28 days. Source: baliyans.com SWACHHATA APP • It saw registration of 1.7 crore citizens on Swachhata App, over 11 crore impressions on social media, more than 5.5 lakh sanitary workers linked to social welfare schemes and over 84,000 informal waste-pickers integrated into the mainstream. Source: Swachh Survekshan 100% OPEN DEFECATION FREE (ODF) • SBM-U was launched in 2014, with the objective of making urban India 100% Open Defecation Free along with 100% scientific solid waste management. • It has a deep impact on health, livelihoods, quality of life and behaviour, which proved to be very helpful while dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic as well.
