Understandin g One Health Approach 1 S A M P L E F O O T E R T E X T What is One Health? One Health is a collaborative, multisectoral, and trans- disciplinary approach working at local, regional, national, and global levels to achieve optimal health and well-being outcomes recognizing the interconnections between people, animals, plants and their shared environment. 2 Source: www.onehealthcommission.org Connected to shared environment One Health is an approach that recognizes that the health of people is closely connected to the health of animals and our shared environment. This isn't a new concept, but it has become more important in recent years. 3 Source: www.onehealthcommission.org Scope of One Health • Agricultural production and land use • Animals as Sentinels for Environmental agent and contaminants detection and response • Biodiversity / Conservation Medicine • Climate change and impacts of climate on health of animals, ecosystems, and humans • Clinical medicine needs for interrelationship between the health professions • Communications and outreach • Public policy and regulation • Research, both basic and translational • Water Safety and Security • Welfare / Well-being of animals, humans, ecosystems and planet 4 Source: www.onehealthcommission.org Potent ia l Outcomes from the One Health Approach • More interdisciplinary programs in education, training, research, and established policy • More information sharing related to disease detection, diagnosis, education and research 5 Source: www.onehealthcommission.org Potent ia l Outcomes f rom the One Health Approach Cont. • More prevention of diseases, both infectious and chronic • Development of new therapies and approaches to treatments 6 Source: www.onehealthcommission.org Human and Animal Interface Many infectious diseases are zoonotic, which means they originate in animals and are transmitted to humans. Various factors like climate change, population explosion, international travel, global trade, biodiversity loss, erratic human lifestyle along with mutations and variations in pathogens have contributed to the threat of emergence and spread of newer infectious diseases like SARS, Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS), and COVID-19. 7 Source: www.jfmpc.com Need for a collective One Health method The pandemic has just reiterated the simple fact that humans like most animals are equally vulnerable to environmental conditions. Now, to address the present and future pandemics effectively, a collective One Health method will be vital which involves protecting human and animal health by managing chemical wastes, monitoring biodiversity, ecosystem change, and by reducing carbon footprint. 8 Source: www.jfmpc.com Importance of One Health approach for COVID-19 The foundation of the One Health approach comprises communication, coordination, and collaboration. This combined holistic method will surely reduce the occurrence and spread of such infections if done under the supervision of experts from different sectors like animal health (veterinarians), environmental health (ecologists, agricultural workers, and wildlife experts), and human health (doctors, epidemiologists, and public health experts). 9 Source: www.jfmpc.com One Health approach in India In India, One Health approach is receiving a positive response from multiple sectors, however, we still stand in a preliminary stage and need to adapt useful strategies of international standards to provide the finest healthcare facilities. 1 0 Source: www.jfmpc.com Conclusion We must adopt “One World, One Health” philosophy from global to the most local levels to avoid any impending pandemics which are likely to occur more often considering the exponentially increasing global population and urbanization. 1 1 Source: www.jfmpc.com THANK YOU 1 2 S A M P L E F O O T E R T E X T
